Question. 1. Enumerate objectives and functions of material management and describe newer concepts used in materials management.

(i) ‘Materials Management’ is a term used to connote “controlling the kind, amount, location, movement and timing of various commodities used in production by industrial enterprises”.
(ii) Materials Management is the planning, directing, controlling and coordinating those activities which are concerned with materials and inventory requirements, from the point of their inception to their introduction into the manufacturing process. It


Question. 2. What is inventory control? Describe functions and techniques of inventory control.

Answer: Inventory control or stock control can be broadly defined as "the activity of checking a shop’s stock". More specifically inventory control may refer to:

·       In operations management, logistics and supply chain management, the technological system and the programmed software necessary for managing inventory
·      In economics and operations management

Question. 3. Describe Equipment procurement. Discuss condemnation and disposal procedures.

Answer: The life cycle of equipment is fairly simple, but one process that seems to cause problems is deciding when to condemn and how to dispose of equipment.

When looking at condemnation and disposal, the engineer in charge of the department should have the experience, knowledge, and authority to decide when a piece of equipment should be scrapped and removed from use.

The reasons for condemning equipment will usually be:

a. VED analysis

Answer: VED Analysis attempts to classify the items used into three broad categories, namely Vital, Essential, and Desirable. The analysis classifies items on the basis of their criticality for the industry or company.

Vital: Vital category items are those items without which the production activities or any other activity of the company, would come to a halt, or at least be drastically affected.




b. Maintenance budget

Answer: The budget of a maintenance department should consist of at least four headings: labor, materials, tools and resources and contracted services. Of course, there may be subheadings, other divisions, etc, but divide it into these four can be simple and practical.
